Day 97 … Canyon de Chelly

Today, we will be checking out the south rim of the canyon. There are 7 overlooks and a 2.5 mile trail that descends into the heart of the canyon offering a close-up view of the White House Ruins. At each stop, we walked along the sandstone to the overlook at the cliff’s edge. From the high vantage point, we could spot the ruins of cliff dwellings, farm land, and the depths of the canyon. At the Junction Overlook, we put on our hiking boots and hit the trail. The path followed the sandstone to a tunnel where we would begin our descent. We walked the many switchbacks to the bottom of the canyon. Just across a small river, we got up close to the White House Ruins. Although a gate kept us from entering the ruins, we were able to get some good photos and check out a couple of petroglyphs. We hiked back up the canyon and continued along the south rim. Often times, there were native Navajo’s displaying and selling their jewelry and crafts at the overlooks.

After exploring the ruins and canyon to our satisfaction, we hit the road headed south towards the Petrified Forest National Park. We made it to a travel plaza just a few miles from the north entrance of the park where we got to watch some Monday Night Football and rest for the night.
