Day 69 … Fort Desoto

We woke up and hit the road towards St. Petersburg today. We opted to take the Sunshine Skyway Bridge across Tampa Bay on our way to Fort Desoto beach. Just after noon time, we reached Fort Desoto State Park. This is a park that Danielle had visited with her family many years ago. In 2009, named Fort Desoto Beach as America’s Top Beach. Before heading out to North Beach, we were on the hunt for a spot to cut Matt’s hair. We managed to find an outlet and some showers. After washing up and sprucing up, we pack a day bag and grabbed our floats. Out on the beach, we relaxed in the sun and waded in the water looking for sand dollars. Laying on the floats and drifting in the warm water was wonderful. As the day passed, we moved on to a picnic area where we snacked on some chips and salsa.
Before leaving the park, we stopped at the fishing pier to try to catch a glimpse of some dolphins. While walking the pier, we saw a women walking a pet goat, plenty of birds, and tons of fishermen. Just when we thought we weren’t going to see any dolphins, Danielle spotted a fin pop out of the water just below the pier. A few moments later, Matt spotted the dolphin again. As we watched, we notice there were a total of 3 dolphins playing in the water just below the pier. On the way out of the park, we stopped at South Beach in time to see a beautiful rainbow appear over the skyway bridge. Back on the road, we made it to St. Petersburg to visit with Danielle’s aunt Susan. It is so nice to see a familiar face every now and then. After catching up for a bit and looking through some photos from the trip, we were back on the road headed north.
