Day 66 … Big Cypress Bend

Last night we stayed in the parking lot of the Miccosukee Casino. This is the same casino that we had stopped at on the way to Miami and received the $15 free slot play. Along with the slot play, we each received a ticket for a 2-for-1 Buffet. This morning, we used the coupon to enjoy a great breakfast buffet. Once we were fully stuffed, we got back on the road and continued along Rt. 41. At the western edge of the park, we stopped at the Big Cypress Bend boardwalk. Here, we were greeted by a gator sunbathing in a waterhole not 15 feet from where we parked. The nature walk was a nice self guided tour along a dirt path that changes over to a boardwalk and leads you into the Everglades. While on the walk, we caught a glimpse of two bald eagles nesting at the top of a tree in the distance. We also saw many birds and a raccoon along the boardwalk.

Back on the road, we continued making our way towards Florida’s Gulf Coast. It was late in the afternoon when we were passing through Naples. Just before sunset, we stopped at Bonita Beach. We walked along the beach watching the sunset and snapping photos of some birds. As the sky got dark, we got back in the car and drove north along Canopy Boulevard. The palm trees and other vegetation made for a nice shady drive under the canopy.
