Day 29 … Bonneville Salt Flats

We woke up to blue skies and miles of salt flats. At the rest area there was a sign identifying the Bonneville Salt Flats that stretched for miles and a foot wash for anyone who walked out to explore them. We drove just a bit further down the highway to the official entrance to the Bonneville Salt Flats State Park, home of the Bonneville Speedway. We drove rights out on to the salt flats along what barely resembled a road. Matt got the fully loaded Escort up to 90 MPH on the vast white expanse. When we were roughly 10 miles into the wasteland, we stopped and got out of the car. The salt crunched as we walked across it, but was moist enough to stick to the bottoms of our shoes.
Before leaving town, we checked out the Montego Bay and Wendover Nugget Casinos. We drove for nearly two hours to reach the next town of Ely, NV where we would spend the night.

After the adventure on the speedway, we made our way to the nearest town, Wendover, NV. Just across the Utah border the town was bustling with casinos, hotels, and fast food joints. We stopped in at the Peppermill Casino to use the restrooms and get a free drink or two. For lunch, we went to a nearby park just beyond the visitor’s center. We cooked up some marinated chicken breast with onions, pineapple and terriyaki sauce and served it over rice.
