Going Cross Country … 21 days and counting!

Danielle and Matt

Danielle and Matt

Hello and Welcome to our Blog!

My name is Danielle and I am a 23 year-old about to embark on a once in a lifetime journey with my 24 year-old boyfriend, Matt.  For years now, Matt and I have talked about going on a cross country roadtrip, but there never seemed to be enough time or enough money to go on such an adventure.  It wasn’t until this summer that we decided to stop talking about going and just go.

The Plan.  As we imagine it, the roadtrip will start in our home state of Massachusetts.  On day 1, we will make our way to Lake Michigan to camp out.  Day 2 will involve a full day of driving as we try to get to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.  From there, we hope to make it to Yellowstone National Park to spend a few days exploring, camping, and hiking.  Our next stop will be Seattle, Washington to check out the Space Needle.  We will spend the second week of our trip traveling down the west coast through Oregon to California where we will spend a couple of nights in Santa Barbara with Matt’s Friend, Jay, before heading to the Grand Canyon.  After exploring Arizona, we will make our way north to Las Vegas and head to Lake Tahoe in Utah for a day of Jet Skiing and swimming.  After checking out Utah and Colorado, we plan on driving across Texas, where Matt was born.  In Texas we will check out the eastern side of the Gulf Coast.  From there, we will head to Alabama to visit the Diamond Mine.  Depending on the finance situation, we will also attempt to visit New Orleans, LA and possibly Florida.

Too Bad Money doesn’t Grow on Trees.  Matt and I know that it seems crazy to be going on a cross country roadtrip during a time when gas prices are setting record highs and the economy is struggling; but, as someone once said, “there is no better time than the present”.  We will be moving into a new house in September, and taking our trip this August will allow us to avoid paying an extra month’s rent while we’re on the road.

With all the planned stops, we anticipate driving about 10,000 miles.  Luckily, I drive a Toyato Corolla (good on gas, small on space).  At an average of over $4.00 per gallon, the gas for the trip will cost approximately $1,200.  Once we started crunching numbers, it became quite evident that we would each need to have a good amount of money saved up for the trip.  As of today (7/17/08), we have raised over $460 by selling furniture on Craigslist and other items at our very first Yard Sale.

  1. Hey,
Do you have any extra room? I want to go too!
We are so glad you two have made the decision to go. No turning back. We hope to see lots of great pics. Do you need a roof rack for bikes? Do you need bikes? Please, call or write everyday. It’s easy, find a starbucks (free WiFi) Yeah…
Don’t forget If it sounds to good to be true it probably is. So, watch out for scams and keep your wits about you.
Stop at lots of Texas Roadhouse restaurants and bring good ideas back to the New Bedford TRH. Show them all your great idea for bread run cards. And remember they can all place the orders at
What date will you be in Seattle? Will you spend more than a day there? The White Cloud hotel chain in Seattle is a very good deal,
nothing fancy just a good clean hotel. Love Dad
